Displaced - BFA Project

Displaced by Francisco Fierro

Rexburg Idaho, with a population of 39,000, is a landscape of endless fields, farms, silos, train tracks, and old buildings. I’ve lived in Rexburg for the last 2 years. Coming from Ecuador and Peru I’ve found it difficult to make a deeper connection to the land and have often felt displaced and alienated.

These feelings have inspired me to create this body of work. Displaced is the culmination of a yearlong photographic study. This compilation of photographs shows my perception and view of this small-town. The bleak, monotonous, and gloomy landscapes represent my inner feelings, psyche, and unfair disposition towards Rexburg. On the other hand, I have also found beauty in the most ordinary places, for example, a shopping cart in a parking lot, or an empty church in the middle of the night. This project is not only about my inability to connect but it also comes from a deep desire to belong, and I leave it up to the viewer to decide if I have been able to reconcile my feelings towards this place.
